If it is a prism and i throw a high arcing pitch which comes down directly on top of the plate but passes throught the prism would that be a strike?

It also happened to the Red Sox in the 1986 World Series. Runner was in fair territory and should have been called for interference, but the umpires thought he was in foul territory and the Mets won the game. And then the Series.

High School softball uses a double bag to avoid these situations. One is in fair territory, the other in foul, but its attached.
Kids were told to basically peg the runner in the back because they would automatically be out so they put these into play and it made it a lot safer.

Did you see the call on the Cuddyer catch vs. Castro in the Twins/White Sox game last night? It seemed pretty clear that Cuddyer made a clean catch. The replay appeared conclusive. Even the Chicago announcers were firm in saying the catch was good. But the umpires awarded Castro a double.

As the broadcast made clear, it was actually three balls, one strike, and a pitcher going to his month on the mound. That was the 4th ball.

Did you see how this umpiring crew, after a horribly called series in SF, went across the bay and made more horrible calls in Oakland, including two bad calls on the same player in the same inning Sunday. After the second one they tossed Bob Geren (you know it’s a bad call if you manage to upset Bob “Xanax” Geren). This crew has now worn out its welcome for the entire Bay Area.

What I particularly liked was when the ump warned both dugouts, then didn’t eject the next pitcher who plunked somebody. I do that with my son sometimes, but I’m not getting paid for it…

It was a good thing he wasn’t umping the Cubs game where the “fan” threw beer on Victorino – he would have thrown Victorino out for drinking on the job. Rapuano threw Victorino out on purpose because he was the only one of the Phillies hitting consistently and the Marlins couldn’t break the game open till then. He pretty much was on the take.
